Only a week into the 2026 World Cup and the entire football hierarchy has been disrupted. Anything feels possible going forward as we all partake in the collective effervescence. I for one have been drinking the World Cup soup right out of the bowl, but if you were only able to spare a stray moment away from more menial tasks, you should savor that moment.
With that in mind, there have been plenty of players who have seized the moment to stake their claim as a breakout, some we expected to and some we didn't see coming at all. Here are seven players who delivered in Matchday 1 of the World Cup and what you should know about them.
Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)
Lille · 18
- The tape. Lined up in the defensive midfield and played like a wily veteran against Seleção. A graceful metronome beyond his years.
- Matchday 1. Five defensive contributions, four tackles, 60/66 passing, nine duels won. He was everywhere.
- Transfermarkt value. €50m.
- Notes. Lille want €70m-80m. Linked to Arsenal, PSG, Liverpool.
Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast)
RB Leipzig · 19
- The tape. Explosive winger. Man of the match in the 1-0 win over Ecuador. Put two Champions League final defenders on skates.
- Matchday 1. No goals, no assists, but 12 touches in the box, 41/51 passing, five chances created.
- Transfermarkt value. €90m. Signed from Leganés for €20m a year ago.

- Notes. PSG has rebuffed interest. With Barcola looking for the exit, he might slot into the starting lineup soon.
Yasin Ayari (Sweden)
Brighton · 22
- The tape. Hammered two goals from outside the box in Sweden's 5-1 over Tunisia. Plays box-to-box.

- Transfermarkt value. €35m. Joined Brighton from AIK for €4m. Loan spells at Coventry and Blackburn.
- Notes. Declined to celebrate, out of respect for his Tunisian background. Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Spurs have all shown interest since the game.
